2018 AHS/ARS Fall Tour
Mare and Foal Inspection & Hanoverian Mare Performance Test
October 6 & 7, 2018

In late September, a top show barn in Maryland was quarantined to prevent the spread of a neuropathic strain of the herpes virus (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy or “EHM”).  In this case, the show barn was accidentally exposed when a neurologic horse was brought onto their property. See attached notice from the State of Maryland. Some other show barns in Maryland (and perhaps also Virginia) have imposed quarantines voluntarily to make sure no infection spreads to their barns.

Hedgeland Equestrian Center also is a top show barn, is just across the river from Maryland, and many horses from Maryland will be attending the inspection at Hedgeland.  In an effort to prevent cancellation of the inspection and to prevent exposure to the herpes virus at our inspection site this year, Hedgeland will require the following for each horse attending the inspection (exception only for foals still at their dam’s sides):

1) valid Coggins;

2) equine influenza, EHV-1 and EHV-4 vaccines within the last six months;

3) veterinary certificate dated on or after September 24, 2018, which also indicates that the horse has a normal temperature.

These documents MUST be provided to a Hedgeland official BEFORE any horses are unloaded.
